Most people think first about the monthly payment, but there are also additional benefits that may help with health care, family support, housing, and daily life. This blog explains common extra benefits for 100% disabled veterans, how eligibility works, and what to check so you do not miss something you qualify for. However, some benefits depend on whether you are rated 100% Permanent and Total (P&T) or paid at the 100% rate through TDIU (Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability), and state benefits can vary based on where you live.

What Does “100%” Mean and Why P&T Matters?

A 100% VA disability rating means the VA has decided that your service-connected conditions cause total impairment when compared to how the VA measures disability. In simple terms, the VA believes your conditions are severe enough to justify the maximum monthly compensation rate.

This does not always mean you cannot do anything at all. It means that, under VA rules, your conditions have the highest level of impact recognized by the rating system.

There are a few different ways a veteran can be paid at the 100% level:

100% schedular rating: Your combined disability ratings reach 100% using the VA’s rating formula. This happens when one condition is rated at 100% or when multiple conditions combine to reach that level.
TDIU (Total Disability based on Individual Unemployability): You are paid at the 100% rate because your service-connected conditions prevent you from maintaining substantially gainful employment, even though your combined rating is less than 100%.

Then there is Permanent and Total (P&T) status.

Permanent generally means the VA does not expect your condition to improve.
Total means you are paid at the 100% level.

P&T matters because many family-related benefits, such as health coverage and education programs for dependents, are commonly tied to this status. A veteran can be paid at 100% without being P&T, but some benefits may not apply unless P&T is granted.

Understanding whether you are 100% schedular, paid at 100% through TDIU, or rated Permanent and Total is key to knowing which additional benefits you and your family may qualify for.

VA Health Care Priority and Lower Out-of-Pocket Costs

VA Dental Care

Dental is a big one that many people miss. Veterans with 1 or more service-connected disabilities rated 100% disabling may be eligible for Class IV, which can qualify them for any needed dental care at no cost. It also notes that being paid at the 100% rate due to a temporary rating does not qualify for that specific benefit.

Examples of VA Dental Care Benefits

If you qualify for VA dental care, benefits may include services like:

Routine exams and cleanings
X-rays and dental evaluations
Fillings and treatment for cavities
Tooth extractions
Gum disease treatment
Root canals
Crowns

CHAMPVA Health Coverage for Spouses and Dependents

The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) is health coverage for certain eligible family members, but it is not for every family in every situation.

VA explains that a spouse or dependent child may be eligible for CHAMPVA if they don’t qualify for TRICARE and the veteran is rated P&T due to a service-connected disability or the veteran died from a service-connected disability, among other qualifiers. TRICARE is the Department of Defense health care program for uniformed service members, retirees, and their families.

Chapter 35 DEA

Another major benefit tied to P&T is Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA), also called Chapter 35.

VA states that a spouse or child may be eligible for DEA if the veteran is permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected disability or other listed situations like death in the line of duty.

This benefit is often used for:

College or training programs
Career-focused education paths
Helping dependents afford school while the veteran’s household adjusts

Commissary and Exchange Privileges

Shopping access can also be an extra benefit.

VA explains you may be eligible for commissary and exchange privileges if you have a service-connected disability rating and were honorably discharged, among other qualifying categories. VA also notes you generally don’t need to apply but you must have the right ID at checkout.

Examples of Commissary and Exchange Privileges

If you qualify, commissary and exchange privileges may give you access to places such as:

On-base grocery stores (commissaries) for everyday items like food, toiletries, and household basics
Discounted or tax-free shopping in many cases, depending on the location and item

VA Home Loan Funding Fee Waiver

Many veterans who receive VA disability compensation do not have to pay the VA home loan funding fee. This is usually based on receiving VA disability compensation. This can lower your upfront costs when buying a home or refinancing. In some cases, you may also qualify for the waiver even if you would normally receive VA disability compensation but are currently receiving military retirement pay instead.

Housing Grants for Severe Service-Connected Disabilities

If a veteran has serious mobility or accessibility needs, the VA has programs that may help.

VA states it offers disability housing grants for Veterans and service members with certain service-connected disabilities so they can buy or change a home to meet their needs, like installing ramps or widening doorways.

Automobile Allowance and Adaptive Equipment

Some veterans may qualify for help buying a vehicle or adding adaptive equipment if they have certain qualifying service-connected disabilities.

VA explains you may be eligible for automobile allowance or adaptive-equipment benefits if you have a service-connected disability that includes at least one of the listed qualifying conditions.

Qualifying conditions

You may be eligible if at least one of these is true:

Loss, or permanent loss of use, of one or both feet
Loss, or permanent loss of use, of one or both hands
Permanent decreased vision in both eyes, including:
- 20/200 vision or less in your better eye with glasses, or
- Better than 20/200 vision but a visual field defect that limits peripheral vision to 20 degrees or less in the better eye
Severe burn injury Veterans Affairs
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)
Ankylosis (frozen joint) in one or both knees or hips
Note: This qualifies only for the adaptive-equipment grant, not the full automobile allowance.

This benefit does not apply to every 100% veteran, but it can be life-changing for those who meet the criteria.

State Benefits

Many states offer extra programs, and they often focus on veterans who are 100% disabled or 100% P&T.

A helpful way to think about this category:

Property tax relief for full or partial for a primary residence is common in many states, but the rules vary a lot.
Other state programs may include things like discounted registration, hunting or fishing licenses, or education benefits.

Because it is state-by-state, the best move is to check your state’s veterans department and your county assessor’s rules to see if property tax relief is the goal.

Common Mistakes That Cause Veterans to Miss These Benefits

Many veterans qualify for extra programs but never receive them because something small gets missed. Here are common issues that can cause delays or missed benefits:

Assuming every “100%” veteran gets the same benefits: Some programs depend on whether you are 100% schedular, P&T, or paid at the 100% rate through TDIU.
Not checking whether you are P&T: Certain dependent benefits are often tied to P&T status. If you do not know your status, you may not realize what your family could qualify for.
Not adding or updating dependents with the VA: If your spouse or child is not listed correctly, it can slow down family-related benefits and create paperwork issues later.
Not requesting or confirming dental eligibility: Some veterans qualify for broader VA dental care but never ask or never confirm their dental class eligibility.
