Winning service connection establishes that your injury or condition is legally related to your military service. That part of the fight is over. But establishing service connection is only step one. The VA can get the legal connection right while still miscalculating how much monthly compensation you actually deserve, or when that compensation should have started.

What a VA Rating Decision Actually Contains

A VA Rating Decision isn’t one single finding. It’s made up of three distinct legal components, and the VA can get any one of them wrong without affecting the others:

Service Connection: The legal establishment that your condition is linked to active duty.
Disability Rating (Percentage): The level of severity, from 0% to 100%, assigned under the VA Schedule for Rating Disabilities (VASRD).
Effective Date: The date from which your monthly back pay and ongoing benefits begin accruing.
